The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Dog Breed

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the largest dog breed in the Toy Dog category.

These adorable little spaniels are descended from toy spaniels popularized by English royalty, most notably King Charles II who was reputedly followed by his dogs wherever he went at court.

King Charles Spaniels vs. Cavaliers

There are distinct differences between Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and the King Charles Spaniel breed (or the English Toy Spaniel, as it is sometimes known).

Although these two dog breeds have the same roots and look generally quite similar, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are somewhat larger (averaging 13 to 20 lbs) than the King Charles (at 9 to 12 lbs). Also, Cavaliers have the traditionally long "spaniel" profile, while the King Charles Spaniel has a shorter muzzle.

The tail of the King Charles Spaniel is often docked (or trimmed short), whereas the long, plumed tail of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are truly one of their most lovely features.

In terms of temperment, the King Charles Spaniel is more of a "lap dog" while the Cavalier Spaniel was bred to be a hunting companion - though even Cavaliers enjoy cuddling with their owners!

Cavalier Color Combinations

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are bred in four color combinations:

Blenheim - predominantly a white background with broken patches of chestnut tan.

Ruby - ideally, entirely chestnut red throughout the dog's coat.

Black & Tan - a black body with chestnut tan over the eyes, on the cheeks, and feet.

Tricolor - white body with typically black markings around the eyes and ears, plus chestnut tan eyebrows and sometimes cheecks.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Personality

These little spaniels make charming companions for almost any family. They are alert, friendly little dogs with easy going personalities. They require some attention to socialization when they are young as they can be very attached to their human owners and in extreme cases, can show separation anxiety.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel makes a wonderful pet for apartment dwellers or pet owners who do not have fenced yards. However, they are energetic dogs and do require regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight.

Cavaliers generally adapt well to children and other family pets.

Fun & Games with your Cavalier

You may think that your happiest times are when your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is curled up and sleeping in your lap, but I'll bet your dog prefers his playtimes!

Cavaliers are energetic and need adequate exercise. Fortunately, they'll enjoy almost any game you want to play. As true Spaniels, they'll happily retrieve a ball or stick for hours on end.

While you can buy pricey rubber balls, frisbees and the like for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, there are a number of low-cost options for "homemade" dog toys that your dog will love every bit as much.

I love it Lindsey! They are so precious. I just called a Cavalier breeder in my area to get information on adopting one. I've been thinking about doing this for months now. This has given me the push. Any recommendations on how to choose the right breeder?

Rena, it is important to find a reputable breeder to make sure you get a healthy puppy with a sweet temperment.  You can find helpful resources and questions you can ask a breeder at http://www.I-Love-Cavaliers.com/Breeder_Questions.
